Subject Ischerac Krul, Origins

Ischerac Krul was born the son of a minor nobleman whose lands were too small for true influence but large enough to place him above consequence. From an early age, Ischerac proved both brilliant and charming. He learned quickly how to speak sweetly, smile easily, and give people the impression of warmth. What he never learned was empathy. At eleven, he locked his nurse inside the servant barracks after she refused him a late snack. He then set the building alight. The fire killed her and two stable hands before it was contained. The household mourned the tragic accident. Ischerac watched the flames with quiet fascination. As he grew older, he discovered another pleasure: control. The other village children, intimidated by his name and eager for his approval, became his willing tools. At his urging they smashed windows, ruined crops, tormented animals, and bullied the other peasants. Ischerac rarely dirtied his own hands. He simply watched, smiling, and learned how easily people could be moved. Craving greater power than a noble title could offer, he persuaded his father to hire a tutor in the arcane arts. The man who arrived was Master Halven Drosk, a mage of considerable learning. Drosk immediately recognized the boy's rare talent. Ischerac absorbed magical theory with frightening ease and spent long nights studying by candlelight while other youths slept. Only later did the tutor begin to understand the nature of the mind he was shaping. By then it was too late. When Drosk hesitated to provide a letter of recommendation to the Conclave of Mages, Ischerac had already begun poisoning his wine in small doses. As the illness worsened, the young man remained attentive and polite, coaxing from the dying man the letter he needed. Having acquired everything he needed from the man, Ischerac simply placed a pillow over his weakened tutor's face and held it there until the struggling stopped. Not long after, a thin young man left his father's estate with a stolen grimoire, a handful of scrolls, and a letter bearing a dying man's seal. He now travels toward the Conclave, smiling pleasantly at anyone who crosses his path.
