Subject Background

The tortured screams of the human echoed off the walls of the canyon. Menoch
gazed on impassivly as the two other ogre youths, no longer children and not
long from their final adult growth, cut the man again and again with their
long hunting knives. Never enough to kill. Just enough to bleed. The man's
family lay not far away, blood still streaming from their throats, steaming
against the cold rocks.

Menoch looked on dispasionatly as the young ogers steped back from the
bleeding man. He lay there, gasping, coughing up blood. Finaly, he looked
up, matching Menoch's gaze with his own. "I'll never tell you. You've
killed my family, you're going to kill me."

He groaned as Menoch grabed him by his hair and jerked his head back,
exposing the throat.

"Foolish human. If all we wanted was your money, do you really think that
it would have taken us this long to kill you?"

His voice was low, and grated like rocks scraped together. He Leaned close,
and the man winced at the smell of death that clung to the young ogre.

"Our mission is not plunder. We are here for the slaughter!" With that,
he gave the man's head a sharp twist, snapping his neck. He didn't watch as
the body slumped against the stone.

Menoch Gestured to the other ogres. "Come! We hunt!" They ran down the
path that led towards the small villiage, the moons shining on their hunting
knives in the darkness.

All was dark when they reached the villiage, the moons having Retired to
their palaces of cloud thoughfully providing Menoch and his companions
darkness in which to work. Silently, they stole into the first home. A man
and a woman were sleeping in a large bed in the corner, his arm draped
lovingly over her shoulder. Menoch pointed, and the ogres moved. The couple
never had a chance to scream. They left the first hut and moved to the
second. As they reached the second home, the light of Solinari broke free of
the clouds, and shone on the villiage. The ogres ignored it and continued
to enter the homes.

The three ogres swept through the villiage like wolfs through sheep. The
screams of the dying quickly woke the small villiage, who ran to see what
the trouble was, only to be cut down themselves. The ogres ran through the
villiage, and when they finished, none were left alive. They began the long
walk back to their own villiage, congratulating themselves on their
slaughter.

It was Otag, the younggest one of them who first heard the horses. He
stopped, trying to smell them, and an arrow took him through the throat, as
a mounted patrol of solamnic knights rode up over the hill.

"Run!" Yelled Menoch, as the knights charged. Togh, the second ogre,
was cut down as he ran. Menoch ran as fast as he could, towards the sound
of the river. He came to an abrubt halt, as he almost fell into it-- about
fifty yards below him. Cursing, he turned to face the knights.

They rode up slowly, drawing swords.

Menoch smiled, as he knew what he must do. "Good chase humans" With
those parting words, he turned, and dived over the cliff, towards the raging
waters below.

He emerged two days later, soaked and freezing. He had lost his knives, and
his money. He looked at the setting sun, and took his bearing. His
villiage would have been destroyed by the knights. He needed a new home.
He had heard of a Maurading band of Ogres and Goblins living near Neraka.
Perhaps they would allow him to plunder with them. He turned towards the
setting sun, and began his walk.
