Subject Another Chance

Venosh had been a mercenary. His family was neither rich nor poor but he
needed to make his own way in the world. He had been in charge of a
company of men and women that had been ordered to raze and ransack
a town owned by a rival of his employer to send a message.

It was raining out and the fires were burning fiercely. The smoke was choking.
Venosh was walking through the middle of the town when he heard a cry.
A small girl was trapped in the upstairs of a house. He started to continue
walking when she screamed again. The flames were starting to attack her
in force now. She was looking out the window, looking right at him, screaming
for help.

He stopped thinking about the money and acted on his instinct. Venosh cut
off his armor as much as he could and scaled up onto the eve of the house
under the window. He shattered the glass to try to get to the girl but there
was a backdraft. He caused the whole upper floor of the house to explode
and burst into flame.

The girl was killed instantly and he was thrown from the overhang into the
mud. Near death and badly burnt Venosh lapsed into unconsciousness.
Tears flowing down his cheeks for the girl he never knew. While he was
unconscious he had a spiritual awakening, a vision, a miracle.

One of the Old Gods came to him. When Venosh looked right at the god
he looked like a common soldier, but out of the corner of his eye Venosh
saw him as either a massive minotaur or a heavenly knight. But always,
when he looked right at him, he was a common foot soldier.

The god bade Venosh to walk with him for a time, and before he had a
chance to say anything they were already strolling through a quiet garden.
The god told Venosh about his impending death. That he was severely
burned and would perish because his men had left him for dead.

So the soldier/god gave him an ultimatum because of the way he acted
throughout his life, and especially in the end. He had showed great courage,
staying steadfast to his beliefs whatever they had been. At the end he showed
with complete selflessness in trying to save the girl and dieing for it, for he
with would surely die.

The ultimatum was this, the soldier god would heal Venosh and allow him
to continue to live if he agreed to follow certain principals. Or he would be
granted a painless death. The god would take his spirit from his body early
and spare him from the agony to come.

Venosh agreed to the terms of life. He would follow the principals of the god
in exchange for another chance. His body was completely healed. Everything.
Every scar every ache every pain. His body was remade as perfect as any
human could be made.

Even with his body healed the true god did not send him back yet. Instead
he wished to personally instruct Venosh in the Codes and Measures of the
Order of Solamnic Knights. After he had spent years studying and learning,
then he sent him back to his plane.

The only thing he had to do now was to join the order and live an honorable
life by the grace of his patron god, Kiri-Jolith.
