Subject The Companionship Begins

I'd been drawn into this conversation by a curious kender. No one else
would sit with me and share a meal, I guess the stench and dishevelled
appearance put them off but then it was meant to.

"I never knew my mother, I'd always wanted to but my old man wouldn't tell
me anything about her," I found myself saying to the curious young fellow
who's bought me a plate of food with the money from a purse he'd picked from
a merchant sitting in the fancier half of the Inn. I was still to learn his
name, as he seemed much more interested in me than I was in him but you
don't turn down a plate of food from a stranger when your stomach is
rumbling and your strength sapped from days on the road running from
something.

"Hey imagine that, not knowing anything about your mother. I don't know how
Pa would have raised all 8 of us in his own." said the kender incredulously
before I cut him off.

"Well I knew my human mother and my seven brothers and sisters but Pa just
wouldn't talk about my real mother. Everyone in town would pelt me with
rotten vegetables when I tried to play with my brothers friends and chase me
away with sticks when I tried to play with my sisters friends."

"Oh is that all. I get chased out of villages and towns almost week now.
It's as if someone has spread malicious rumours about me and my kin. Why
just the other day they accused me of stealing this pair of glasses" he
produces a very strange pair of glasses with multiple folding lenses "and
before I could explain that they were just lying around in a desk. Before I
could make a run for it they had nasty smelly fishing nets thrown over me
and I was hauled off to this dank dark room where I was left to rot. Good
thing they didn't search me very well as I still had my hair pins in and as
soon as I'd collected my travelling bag I was out of that nasty place."

"I just wish I knew more about her but when I was old enough to fend for
myself I was forced to flee the village I grew up in and since then I've
lived of the land travelling where ever my legs take me."

"Hey that sounds like wanderlust to me. So Clavius why dont the two of
travel together for a while?" His look of delight was contagious and it was
strange how at that moment the merchant at the other table started looking
for his money bag. He seemed to have chosen a table at the window and with
our food already eaten and paid for he grabbed his bag a quickly exited
through it. Not wanting to cause too many problems for the merchant I left
his money pouch on the table and joined my companion who was already making
a hasty retreat towards the main road.
