Author: Hamrack Date: Wed May 13 18:52:57 2009 Subject A gust of wind: Hamrack's Beginnings. As a young Ergothian, Hamrack found himself often on the deck of his father's ship the Enigthiman. He would hide in empty barrels, below the decks, run up the ratlines, much like a seaborn monkey. One day, when he was perhaps six to seven summers, a strange man in a dress took passage upon the Enigthiman to Palanthas. Hamrack's father had a shipment of spice and supplies to that port, so the mans passage was simply an extra bonus for the crew. The man in the dress, apparently was a magician of some sort, mage if you will, and delighted the crew in the evenings upon the aft deck. Shows of fluttering lights, gusts of wind, cantrips and strange words... but the young Hamrack watched in awe and tried his best to remember the words. A number of years later the boy found himself becoming a man, and though still tied invariably to the sea and the ship... he also would still recite those words and gestures at times... often in the crows nest by himself. "Pwshhwaa ooshgf" he gestured one day of dead calm.... WHOOOOSH a wind came from apparently nowhere and snapped the sails full! The ship lurched forward and the sailors scrambled to make way, bewildered at the sudden change in their fates. All, except Hamrack's father... he had seen the young man and realized what had happened, and on that day he realized his young son was not so young anymore... and no longer could he teach him his own ways, but he must learn the ways of magic. Perhaps once he has learned his profession, the boy could return as a man and take his place at his father's side.
