Subject Mercenary: The Revival

The two men stared idly at the
ocean as the wind threatened to quench the
fire burning in their pipes. It had
been a long time since Jerald had been
back to Palanthas, the nearing sights at
shore did not fit his memory. News
of the war had caught his attention, and he
intended to get his plans in
motion right away.

"You'll need a good dozen men
for some of these, " Kulak spoke in a hush
tone as he eyed the stack of
contracts. "Maybe more."

Jerald nodded in agreement. "Aye, we will. We
are blessed by the war, money
to be made for the men who have fallen on tough
times."

Jerald leaned back against his chair and puffed on his pipe as men
began
throwing lines to the Palanthas docks. Times were indeed tough, the
economy
had felt the impact of the war. Thieves and looters grew in numbers
daily as
the Solamnic numbers thinned to move to the front lines. Even the
city
guards were not to be trusted, so they said. A fine climate for a
dishonest
man to make an honest coin.

As they made their way from the dock they
overheard a group of sailor's
demanding payment of a "docking fee" from the
other passengers. A strong
hand wrenched on Jerald's shoulder, spinning him
around abruptly.

"Docking fee, sir. You haven't paid, " smiled the man as
he stretched out
his hand. Many forms of extortion were common practice of the
Mariner crews,
they had expected as much.

Kulak spoke in a harsh tone, "We've
paid for passage, there was no talk of
docking fees. Get on about your
business."

The two men turned to walk away as the sailor's hand landed again
on
Jerald's shoulder. As he spun he flared his cloak over the man's face
as
Kulak dealt him a quick blow to the head with the handle of a dagger.
The
sailor's body went limp, crashing to the ground. A small crowd had
gathered,
giving Jerald a perfect time to begin his advertisement. He slipped
the
paper from his pack and rolled it along the wall of the fishing store.
Kulak
quickly pinned it to the wood with a thin dagger from his belt.
