The Great Library of Palanthas

An Aesthetic shows you to a small reading room.

Stories of Ansalon from the view of Nagroch.

A little gully dwarf runs by and says 'Wordwrap is at 80. You change? Off 65 80.'
The gully continues 'Eyes hurt? Turn Color OFF!! (regular story dates)

Astinus says 'Enter the main library here to view only the author list.'
Astinus gently places a thread-bare book bound in cloth on the table in front of you.
You note the spine bears the word 'Nagroch' scribed in glowing grey ink.

Subject Not only the strong survive

Nagroch grins as he
thinks back to his days in the litter. Fighting for
every scrap of food thrown
to the litter and not being the biggest or
strongest meant having to using
cunning to survive.

The first time he killed still stood out in his mind. She'd
grabbed the last
scrap from his hands but being smaller than all the other
Nagroch could do
nothing then. He waited till everyone was asleep and then moved
cautiously,
making sure to not wake any of the other. Grabbing a piece of bone
that had
been cleaned of the last bits of flesh and marrow he moved closer to
her.
Waving it under her nose she opened her mouth as if to chew on a snack
and
he carefully pushed the piece of bone into her mouth and before she
could
react shoved it as far down her throat as he could. He moved back a
safe
distance so her arms couldn't grab him and he watched her choke, not able
to
scream out for help.

By the age of six the competition for food had
drastically reduced as more
than half of the litter had died in various ways.
The attrition rate for
this litter was higher than normal but then Nagroch was
not a normal ogre
child. Where others relied on brute strength alone to survive
Nagroch found
that deception and coercion worked well.

By the time Nagroch was
ready to go out into the world and make a name for
himself there was only him
and Burglatch from their litter. Nagroch had
killed almost half of the litter
either on his own or by getting the others
to kill for him before then killing
or having them killed.

It was at this time that a priest came to their cave and
asked to see the
litter. Looking over what remained of the litter he smiled
broadly and
pointing at Nagroch said "That one is destined for greatness. He
must come
with me"
