Subject Some Kind of Progress

The past months had been interesting. That was the only word that seemed fitting. Good would have been too strong. Miserable wasn't right either - there was misery, but it was spread out, and interspersed with moments of small triumph. When I had reached the Knights I had found myself greeted by a bear of a man. While I am by no means small, he was...there really aren't any words to describe it. He was certainly not what I pictured when listening to father's tales. He reminded me of none of the knights whom I had met when they came to the family keep. Still, odd as he was, he was a man of honor, strength, duty. Once could respect a man like this. He listened to my short tale of family woe and there was stern kindness there. I had missed the assault on Schallsea and the skirmishes with the Dragonarmies. I cursed the lack of opportunity to prove myself. Still, there would be other fights, other foes (and more of the same). I made myself as useful as possible during this lull. Although little to no fighting occurred, I aided in the recuperation and rebuilding efforts where I could. I had little skill in healing, but I found my abilities being used elsewhere. I was at home in the forest. I had the knowledge and strength to gather herbs, chop and haul timber, or hunt. I had experience in carpentry and masonry, and the keen eyes of a hunter which made keeping watch almost trivial. Between these tasks, daily prayer, and the continued honing of my skills with both blade and bow, the days were full. To be honest, the mundanity of it was welcome after the slaughter of my family. The repetitive tasks kept me busy and allowed me some relief from the full weight of that misery. Unfortunately, the business was also tempered with the knowledge that although I could see my own abilities improving, I did not find myself rising through the ranks quite as quickly as I (or my father) had hoped. Still, I dealt with the state of things, my time would come.
