Author: Tyril Date: Mon Oct 9 21:05:07 2006 Subject History I stand now, not as I have always been. I once stood shackled. Now I stand free. I once fought for a master. Now I fight for myself. I once was the whipped. Now I stand, whipping the whipper. This is where my story begins. -------------------------------------------------------------- Born into a society based on gladiators and conquest, I had little choice in my destiny. I was born and bred to fight for my honor. Yet, as you can imagine, with all the gladiator fighting, there was an obscene amount of betting. My life was a subject to such betting. The fights were usually staged, so in order to pay off debts, indentured slavery was often the form of payment. Having a child was also a way out. Selling children into slavery was popular as well. Which is how I I got my start. The actual details of my life are vague, generic. The bland facts of an enslaved child maturing into a man. I'll leave these points for you to delve into within your imagination. The important events revolve around how I obtained my freedom. And this...I will tell you. -------------------------------------------------------------- There were many variations of the gladiator games that were displayed in the Colliseum. I had a special knack for the sea battles. They would flood the bottom of the arena and bring in ships. Lining slaves on each ship, the battles would commence. The 'sea' battles. As I said, I had a particular aptitude for such battles, and excelled in them to the degree of becoming a crowd favorite. In fact, the slavemasters reserved me for these matches. This often gave me several weeks respite between fights. During one particular battle, I managed to behead the captain of the opposing ship. Though we won, the 'captain' happened to belong to a wealthy slave owner who had loaned him for that sole fight. Encouraged by a new deck hand prospect, the slave was quick to purchase me. I was considerably familiar with working a ship from my former engagements; I was ushered right out to sea aboard a merchant vessel. It also happened to deal in illegal goods...Rarely and on the side, of course. -------------------------------------------------------------- Now I stand upon the deck of this ship a free man. My destiny lies before me.
