Devout

A look of bewilderment crossed Elhonna, the young
half-elf's face
as she entered the great and holy city of
Palanthas. Never before
had she found herself among such
grandeur, and hussle and bussle
of a large city.

"This
certainly doesn't look anything like my home," she thought
to
herself. She began to recall the wolderness in which she
was
raised. Large trees, thick underbrush, babbling streams and
various
forms of creatures both large and small was what her home
land
consisted of. The majority of the fold that lived in her
small
village were that of half-elven out casts, and other
down-trodden
peoples whom fled their home lands due to some form
of scrutiny or
another. They were a close community, everyone
knew everyone and
would gather every day to share their evening
meal.

Thinking of her home brought in a flood of emotion; she
missed those
closest to her, an elderly half-elf in particular
who went by the name
of Xraphercy. He was the village's healer
and holy man who taught
all that he came into contact with about
the word of the Gods of good,
and the hope they gave to all kind.
Mishakal being his patron diety,
he was most wise in Her ways,
and deeds.

Fascinated to the core about Xraphercy's craft and
knowledge, she
clung to him like a lost puppy and learned
whatever she could by his
example and teachings. Elhonna rarely
left his company as he quickly
became the father she ever knew.

One day, not long ago, Xraphercy fell ill. A raging fever
overtook
the old half-elf's body that rendered him blind, and
very weak.
Elhonna and his other pupils tended to him tirelessly
for weeks,
offering all of the medicines, and remedies that they
knew of. They
sat in vigilant prayer to Mishakal every night that
She may cure his
illness, or relieve his suffering.

"It is now
my time," Elhonna recalled Xraphercy whispering in her ear
in the
last moments of his life, "I have accomplished much in my
stay
upon this plane, and wish to return home..." She began to
softly weap,
and held the old half-elf's hand in hers. She
leaned over, and kissed
him upon his forehead, that still burned
fiercely with the fever.
"Rest now, my father, and She will guide
your way," she whispered back
comfortingly as Xraphercy drew his
last breath.

Despair and grief took Elhonna's soul at his
passing, until she
remembered Mishakal's teachings: Fret not for
the deaths of others,
remember and honor their memory, but keep
your concerns for the living
and those in need of healing and
aid.

It was then, that Elhonna decided to depart her beloved
village, she
had to learn more about the healing art, and graces
of the Gods of
good. With a heavy heart, she gathered all of her
possessions, and
bade farewell to all in her village, "I will
return someday soon,"
she told them, "I will miss all of you very
much, but I must seek
out more knowledge to better my craft, so
I can tend to your ailments
better."

With that said, she
left... Only turning back once to wave goodbye
to those gathered
to see her depart. Wiping a tear from her cheek with
the back of
her sleeve, she made way for the city of Palanthas, of
which
she'd only heard tales of her entire life.

Now Palanthas stared
at her directly in the face, and she wondered
where this journey
would take her next.
