The Great Library of Palanthas

Astinus' Office

Dominating the center of this room is a massive birch desk. Legend claims this desk has supported the thousands of volumes of history Astinus has recorded. A large pot of ink, a container of sharpened quills, and a candelabra complete the desks decorations. Small windows line the room, allowing light to trickle in and gently illuminate the entire room. A comfortable couch rests against the west wall. Tapestries hang on the walls between the windows. Shelves line the walls, filled with tomes of the more recent records of heroes and villians upon the face of Krynn.

The librarian notices you aren't reading anything... Astinus hands a private journal to an Aesthetic standing by you. You note the spine bears the word 'Cerene' scribed in rich maroon ink. As you glance down at the page you read..

From the pages of Cerene's book..

Author: Cerene Date: Mon Jun 9 10:09:23 2014 Subject Cerene and her fate

Cerene shivered with fright. She was afraid of water - any water. Her dreams were filled with crashing waves, of her body sinking to the bottom of the Sea, dead. Growing up in a Dargonesti village, a Sea elf no less, she cursed the gods for her weakness. Her father was tall, handsome, and like all of his kind, arrogant. Sensing his daughter's fear, he grabbed the collar of her tunic, pulling her in the air until Cerene was held fast over the water. "Cerene, stop being so foolish. We are Sea elves and the Sea is our home." Trembling now, each crashing wave seemed to match her erratic heartbeats. In a plaintive whisper, "Sorry, father, I can't do this. The water is calling me to my death. Of that, I am certain." Perhaps it was her imagination, but all she could hear was the rough surf, pulling on her, calling to her. Cerene's father tossed his daughter down on the sand in disgust. Looking around, he could see the looks of pity and worse from the other villagers. Stomping off to the village pub, he ordered a large glass of dark beer and soon was lost in his thoughts as he tried to drink away his concerns for his daughter. Meanwhile some of the village boys saw Cerene standing on the water's edge. Flar, the biggest of the elf lads, was also a terrible bully. Grinning cruelly, he yelled to the rest, "Come on, let's have some fun." The boys soon circled Cerene, keeping her pinned against the Sea. The frightened lass looked in vain for an opening, reading trouble in eyes of the gang leader. "Flar, please let me go or I will scream." But the huge bully had already thought of a plan and stuffed a cloth into her mouth, urging the other boys to grab Cerene's arms and legs. His eyes glowing menacingly, Flar whispered, "Time for your swimming lesson, Cerene." Looking at the rest of the boys, he winked, "We won't hurt you much." With a nod of his head, he signaled the boys to carry Cerene into the water. White as a ghost, Cerene was whimpering softly as she watched helplessly as the boys began to lower her rigid body into the water. Struggling wildly, she couldn't break their strong grips and soon found her head being pulled down, beneath the surface. She couldn't breathe and then everything went dark. Flar and the other elf boys panicked, not wanting to really hurt Cerene, but they lift her body out of the water, it was as if the Sea was it, calling it. The boys ran to the shore shouting for help, but Cerene's body was lost beneath the waves. Then Cerene opened her eyes, blowing bubbles of astonishment as she was alive, breathing water. A giant Sea turtle was watching her, a smirk on her face. Suddenly a voice filled her mind, "Daughter, why did you resist the Sea calling you? You belong to the Sea." And that was how Cerene become a cleric in service of Zeboim, the Sea Queen.
