Subject     The maiden mage

Finally he was well clear of any land! The sea gently rocked his boat as he removed his clothing and dove into the water. With strong, fluid strokes he swam around the craft in ever increasing distance until the boat was barely visible on the horizon. "Do I really want to give all this up?", he thought. His family had been fishermen for generations. It was a noble profession and seemed to fit him like a glove. Maybe that was part of the problem for Slayd. There were challenges in any profession, but he was looking for more. There was nothing left for him about the life of a fisherman and that left him with a peculiar, empty feeling. When the young mage first arrived in his village, Slayd was courteous, but not overly interested in her - the demands of the day's work took all of his focus. It was later, as he sat in the Inn with friends, that Slayd first learned something more than just the superficial about this young mage. Several of his friends had been quite taken with her and were discussing stories, anecdotes and rememberances that she had shared with one or the other. As he listened, Slayd became enthralled with the idea of magic, and the challenges awaited any who chose this path. Slayd had to know more, and sought out the waiting for a ship to appear, or some other sign. As I approached, she turned her head, meeting my eyes and said, "I knew you would come" ...
